Director, Software Development

 

The Role:

We're seeking an experienced engineering leader who will be responsible for the AI training and inferencing software on AMD GPUs. The role touches various innovation points across linear algebra algorithms, ML frameworks, AI compiler technologies and hardware acceleration to lead our distributed engineering team to success.  As a Director, you will drive software technology strategies; oversee product development and delivery, team development and agility; and ensure the team is hitting its mark. You will help the team do their best work by inspiring and instilling a sense of purpose/innovation and removing obstacles that get in the team's way. You will partner with and work across cross-functional teams to ensure engineering efforts are aligned.

 

The Person:

To be successful in this role, you will be a hands-on leader with strong technical, project management and organization skills.  You possess exceptional knowledge, communication and presentation skills and are comfortable working with external customers and internal stakeholders.   Experience in ML / AI technologies and hardware acceleration are  strong assets.  You have outstanding people leadership skills to lead, motivate, and guide world class engineers working in a fast-paced, matrixed, global environment. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a 60+ diverse engineering team, distributed globally
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and execution of multiple projects, ensuring scope and schedule are established for projects; oversee resource allocation for the department, including prioritization and staff deployment; acts based on changed priorities
  • Drive product delivery and results, making progress through action during periods of scale
  • Work cross-functionally with product, design, and marketing to ship next-generation products and increase cohesion between product/design and engineering
  • Interface with external customers
  • Formulate and execute the process and organizational improvements (establish coding standards, best practices, tech tools adoption) which enhancing overall effectiveness; proactively seek ways to improve people and management processes
  • Interact with teams developing opensource frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.
  • Manage engineering morale, retention, culture, and performance
  • Provide career development, coaching, mentorship, and sponsorship, while cultivating emerging leaders

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience leading large, global engineering teams
  • Significant experience shipping large-scale production SW and managing a geographically diverse team
  • Demonstrable experience designing customer-facing APIs and libraries to accelerate computationally-demanding algorithms and applications
  • Software change management expertise (e.g. with tools like JIRA)
  • Familiarity with C/C++ programming in the Linux environment
  • Familiarity with GPU programming models like CUDA and/or HIP
  • Familiarity with communication primitives like UCX, GRPC, MPI, NCCL
  • Prior experience of deep learning software and frameworks
  • Strong knowledge and foundation of mathematical concept
  • Desire to be hands-on in all phases of design and development
  • Proponent of adopting open sources tools and principles
  • You are deep technically and can mentor and guide all levels of engineers
