Director of Edge-Inference/Machine Learning Application Engineering, Embedded Business Unit



AMD’s embedded business unit is looking for a seasoned engineering leader in Austin for establishing and leading a MLAE (Machine Learning application engineering) team in Austin TX. Automotive ADAS and Automated Drive market is the strategic focus/growth area for Embedded business and Machine-Learning/Inference is one of the key use-case for the customers.

This MLAE team will be customer facing team of highly talented Systems-SW engineers who will work closely with customer engineers in achieving right functionality, precision and top-notch performance for their ML/Inference use-cases.  Understanding of the customer’s full inference/ML and compute stack as well as use-cases and then analyzing the code for porting and optimization is a critical in enabling customer’s success with the AMD based solution.



This leader should be able to attract, hire and nurture a highly talented team in this domain and scale to increasing requirements of many customers and different SW solutions. This leader and the team will be part of the over-arching vision of deep-collaborative customer success model where these engineers work along with x-functional team of domain experts and customer program management for the success of their customer programs and as a result building long lasting relationship and strong competitive advantage.

The leader should be extremely knowledgeable, very hands-on, and versatile in technically understanding the different custom SW solutions for ML/Inference which can also expand into other areas of Edge-Inference in networking market segment as well.

You will interact with key engineering and management stakeholders for the strategic customers as well as AMD’s business team to report progress, align on critical topics and drive action items to closure. This is a highly visible role and pivotal to the success of the business unit in achieving the ambitious-and-aggressive growth goals.



  • Strong technical Leadership in establishing, growing, and leading a small but highly talented customer application engineering team.
  • Making sure that right team assignments are done on regular basis, scale the team as customer programs increase and making sure all the bottlenecks are resolved for the team to get their job done.
  • Able to play at different technical levels and be able to roll-up-the-sleeves and deep-dive into technical details as well as think and articulate right architectural view of the things.
  • Tackling the customer program problems which are escalated and requires right level of technical seniority including internal and external executive communications and alignment.
  • Making sure the R&R are defined and clearly aligned with x-functional teams and the vision of customer success model is operationalized.
  • Inspiring and instilling the customer-success-obsessed mindset in the team and being the voice of the customer in internal forums and problem specific team interactions.
  • Precise data-driven executive reporting on the overall consolidated status on the deliverables of the team with right level of abstraction and not getting lost in the nitty-gritty details.
  • Timely escalate and ask for help on the problems which are beyond you to solve and requires senior mgt. facilitation.
  • Mentoring, guiding, and directing the team in right way of approaching the problems for most effective and efficient problem solving especially in navigating ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to technical understand and tackle a complex matrix of product-lines, market-segments and unique customer applications.
  • Effective conflict management and resolution including external conflicts and alignment with customers on tough situations, pushing back on unreasonable requests outside R&R etc.
  • Be expert and drive right solutioning in the crises handling. Tackle competing priorities and high-pressure situations and strike right balance between tactical and strategic work items.
  • Relentless pursuit for excellence by challenging and changing the status-quo and becoming the change agent.




  • Demonstrated experience in customer-facing technical roles as Machine Learning systems architect or systems engineering. Prefer Director or Senior Manager experience leading a sizable team in semiconductor companies.
  • Highly knowledgeable and experienced in ML/Edge-Inference SW all the way from applications, Neural Network Models and Acceleration/Porting on x86 and GPU compute processors.
  • Good breadth and depth of systems technical knowledge (x86, SoC, Platform-HW, Platform-SW, BIOS/FW, Tools) and being able to connect the dots among domain experts and systems view.
  • Customer collaboration with a proven track record in Inference use-cases of automotive or networking market segments preferred.
  • Experience working in a multi-site and multi-cultural environment and ability to travel as needed.
  • Team player with a passion and sense of urgency and drive for results.
  • Excellent customer and exec. communication skills.
  • Ability to align and build consensus among parties working towards the final goal.
