What you do at AMD changes everything

At AMD, we push the boundaries of what is possible.  We believe in changing the world for the better by driving innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies – building blocks for gaming, immersive platforms, and the data center.

Developing great technology takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration, respect, and who will go the “extra mile” to achieve unthinkable results. It takes people who have the passion and desire to push boundaries, deliver innovation, and change the world. We invite you to take a look at this opportunity available to join our Server Performance team.

HPC Performance Engineer - Member of Technical Staff

The Role:

An outstanding technical contributor to help optimize performance of AMD-based next-generation servers for our cloud and enterprise customers. Our Server Performance Architecture team delivers performance features and models for all of AMD’s flagship systems: Server, Client, Game Console, discrete graphics, and machine learning. As a passionate and dedicated HPC Engineer in the Server Performance Group, you will optimize the hardware, software, and operation system for cloud-related applications, which require high-performance analysis on large amounts of data.

The Person:

Well informed on the latest trends in HPC applications and algorithms - in the cloud and with accelerators. Able to quickly determine through quantifying and isolating performance bottlenecks how next-generation server CPUs and platforms should be engineered. Effective with sharing insights to drive features into the next gen.

Do you seek to tackle the most complex and exciting challenges in the computing industry? We thrive solving sophisticated performance challenges across a range of compute areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain AMD's technological leadership position
  • Collect and analyze performance profiling data and traces from customer deployments of AMD based servers
  • Work closely with team members to understand design architecture and to propose solutions to improve and enhance performance with given SoC/IP and markets
  • Micro-benchmarking, analyzing and tracing various benchmarks, workload characterization, competitive analysis on various hardware platforms, identifying bottlenecks and proposing feedback and solutions for performance improvement
  • Drive the collaborative development and workload performance optimization with AMD’s partners and customers

Preferred Experience:

  • Running workloads for throughput and latency across system architecture, spanning the application and related frameworks, the Java Virtual Machine, operating system, hypervisor, network and storage drivers, BIOS, CPU core, memory & I/O subsystems
  • Exceptional foundation in systems architecture, cutting across CPU, memory, storage and I/O subsystems
  • Exposure to High Performance Computing (HPC) and Machine Learning (ML) codes, building recipes, and tuning (e.g. compiler and OpenMP and MPI, NUMA, and various frameworks)
  • Exposure to HPC applications like HPL, DGEMM, WRF, NAMD, LSDYNA, ANSYS, GROMACS, Star-CCM... is a plus
  • Exposure to performance profiling tools, preferably x86 based (e.g. linux perf, Windows perfmon); hardware performance counter monitoring tools
  • Knowledge of OS internals and kernel parameter tuning experience

Academic Credentials:

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field of study
  • PhD preferred with SoC/IP performance studies
