High Performance Computing Architecture Researcher

AMD Research is an entrepreneurial research organization with a strong track record of driving research innovations into AMD products. We are a global leader in the development of the world’s most advanced high performance exascale computers. We work closely with government and commercial customers along with internal teams and partners to develop the hardware and software technologies of next generation computing platforms, such as Frontier, the world-leading 1.5 exaflop supercomputer. THE PERSON:

AMD Research drives leading-edge research and technology direction critical to our company’s future.  A successful candidate will have a drive to create his or her own destiny and shape the future of computing; a Ph.D. degree in computer science, engineering, other closely related field, or have equivalent experience; an extensive record of patents and publications; and excel at describing the team’s novel solutions to academic and commercial audiences.

THE ROLE:

AMD Research is looking for a researcher to drive our long-term vision in architectures for heterogeneous compute environments. In this role, you will deliver projects that advance AMD’s products beyond the state of the art. You will be responsible for driving the development of your inventions into a scaled out system that utilizes a variety of current and emerging accelerators and tightly coupled CPUs. You will work closely with teams in research, products and external customers to define architectures and system techniques that address tomorrow’s needs today.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze the performance limitations of irregular workloads on AMD hardware and conceive of optimizations to accelerate the performance. Includes multi-core, multi-processor, and multi-node problems in shared memory and networking.
  • Implement innovative software and/or hardware solutions and demonstrate their effectiveness analytically and/or in simulation.
  • Develop software systems for heterogeneous compute architectures.
  • Drive the results of the research projects into product roadmaps.
  • Test and analyze innovations using datasets and execution patterns that match customer requirements.
  • Submit patentable inventions.
  • Communicate research results to academic, product and commercial audiences.
  • Champion an innovation culture that creates results and impacts product roadmaps.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience and knowledge in the following fields
    • Networking programming models such as MPI and GASNet and their relationship to hardware
    • Machine learning / Artificial Intelligence framework implementations
    • CPU and GPU microarchitecture
    • GPGPU programming and other SIMD platforms for HPC and data analytics problems preferred.
    • Machine learning classification algorithms and their application commercially and for research a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful research that is both published academically and integrated into commercial products.
  • Demonstrated track record of issued patents that are embodied in successful products.
  • Experience collaborating across a geographically distributed team (AMD Research has sites across North America)

 

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

  • Programming Languages: C++, C and proficient in OOP design & development
  • Experience with High Performance Computing systems
  • Multiple academic or corporate awards

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

PhD degree or equivalent accomplishments in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field
