Automation Manager, Server Performance Engineering

The Role:

AMD’s System Performance Engineering (SPE) team is responsible for performance test, analysis, and optimization of AMD’s record-breaking flagship EPYC line of server processors. SPE is looking for an outstanding technical manager to lead the automation team. The team’s charter spans all aspects of server performance, including benchmarking, workload characterization, competitive analysis, bottleneck analysis, performance modeling, tracing, performance feature optimization, and HW/SW co-optimization.  The automation team within SPE focuses on creating efficiencies by automating the execution, data collection, and visualization of the data.


The Person:

The successful candidate will be motivated to lead teams that seek the most complex and exciting challenges in the computing industry. The candidate should have a proven track record leading teams to deliver exceptional results, have a reputation as a technical influencer, strong technical grounding in Computer Systems, and 5+ years in a leadership role in Performance Engineering. 


Key Responsibilities:

As the Manager of the automation team, the individual will be responsible for leading a high-caliber team of experienced performance automation engineers who are engaged in our automation process.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Define and manage team deliverables
  • Project and plan for resources based on future needs
  • Coordinate dependencies with other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the global leadership team on planning and execution
  • Organize the team to ensure it is performing to its full potential
  • Coach and mentor career growth for team members
  • Grow and manage the automation team, drive strategy and efficiency improvements


Preferred Experience:

We are seeking a person with a demonstrated technical background in automation management, with experience leading high performing teams.


  • Required technical experience:
    • System level automation, benchmarking, and system performance analysis
    • DevOps Experience including reviews, static analysis, functional test, CI, promotion, and continuous development
    • An understanding of server system architecture, OSes, and processor architectures
    • Operating Systems: Windows, Linux, Virtualization
    • Languages of interest – Ansible, Ansible Tower, Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Javascript, Jupyter Notebook, Microsoft PowerBI, nginx, Node.js, OpenStack, Python, React, Scala
    • Databases – relational, blob, intermediate stateless data stores
    • Analysis Tools – PowerBI, Sigma, Excel, etc.
    • Process Flow – GitHub, Jenkins, nifi, ETL in general, etc.


  • Required leadership experience:
    • Work cross-functionally with partners across AMD
    • Create and manage project plans
    • Effectively communicate progress towards operational goals
    • Develop best practices within AMD for how to operationalize manual work with a focus on scale and efficiency
    • Responsible for the development and rollout of new workflows
    • Agile development methodologies
