Performance Architect (Principal)

The Role:

As AMD grows we are adding an outstanding technical architect to optimize performance of next-generation architecture used in servers for cloud and enterprise customers. As a passionate and dedicated Server Systems Performance Architect in our architecture division, you will optimize workloads for throughput and latency by seeing opportunities across all parts of system architecture, spanning the application and related frameworks, the Java Virtual Machine, operating system, hypervisor, network and storage drivers, BIOS, CPU core, memory & I/O subsystems. This principal architect role is all about maintaining AMD's technological leadership position!

The Person:

Well informed on the latest trends in the cloud (e.g. storage, security, IoT). Able to quickly ascertain, in a data-driven manner, how next generation server CPUs and platforms should be engineered to support those needs.

A technical leader across project and departmental boundaries and with a proven track record for sustained innovation. Provides consultative direction with senior management, coaches and mentors experienced staff. Represents AMD to the outside technical community, partners and vendors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze performance profiling data and traces from customer deployments of AMD based servers to quantify and isolate performance bottlenecks.
  • Share insights to drive features into the next generation of server CPUs and software stack components.
  • Set modeling methodologies and simulation infrastructure improvements to help in the feature evaluation process.
  • Work closely with other team members to understand design architecture and to propose solutions to improve/enhance performance.
  • Micro-benchmarking, analyzing and tracing various benchmarks, workload characterization, competitive analysis on various hardware platforms, identifying bottlenecks and proposing feedback and solutions for performance improvement.

Preferred Experience:

Preferred years of experience in industry depends on academic degree: Bachelors with at least 9 years, Masters with at least 7 years, or PhD with at least 5. These are bare minimums. Strong preference for much more experience.

  • Outstanding foundation in CPU micro-architecture, modeling methodology, simulation framework.
  • Experience with developing performance simulators and leading performance architecture teams.
  • Strong expertise in systems architecture, cutting across CPU, memory, storage and I/O subsystems.
  • Strong exposure to popular server applications and micro-architectural sensitivities associated with them.
  • Exposure to complex cloud or enterprise software stacks such as Hadoop, Spark, Oracle or others.
  • Power user of performance profiling tools, preferably x86 based (e.g. linux perf, Windows perfmon)

Academic Credentials:

Master’s degree with emphasis in Electrical Engineering, Computer architecture, or Computer Science with SoC/IP performance studies
