Sr/Lead System Power Management Engineer

 

THE ROLE:

The successful candidate will assume responsibility for broad leadership and coordination of power domain technical dependencies and schedule for AMD products. This is a highly multi-functional systems role leading horizontal teams.

 

THE PERSON:

 

An experienced PC-industry engineer with examples of previous work crafting x86 systems. An effective communicator and influencer among technical people from junior engineers to executives. Crafts comprehensive high-level plans of the operation of sophisticated PC systems. Jumps in to build proofs of concepts that demonstrate solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a vertical role; the candidate is expected to drive deep-dive analysis and technical assessment of power management features through enablement and optimization. This requires understanding of several subject areas supplying to power management features, routines, and algorithms. The candidate will address feature ROI, considering silicon/IP design and targeting trade-offs, by working closely with SMU firmware, BIOS, platform and thermal engineering teams driving continuous improvement for post-silicon battery life and performance targets. 

 

The following is a list of key leadership responsibilities that the candidate will assume: 

  • Planning – bringing together testing, enablement and optimization plans for all power management related features, across business units, from pre-silicon to post-silicon to ensure highest risk power management features are covered.

  • Coordinating debug of power management related features, helping to drive open issues to closure

  • Decision making – making priority calls based on partial/incomplete data

  • Communication – technical and non-technical – pulling together meetings as vital, setting up clear agendas and sending notes, following up on action items

  • Leadership – influencing the product and wider teams

  • Proactively driving continuous improvement for post-silicon power and performance activities

  • Participating in the product definition process

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Highly desired 

  • SOC – understanding of power management routines and algorithms operations based on the SOC IP design and micro architecture specifications. This includes but not limited to industry standard clock gating and power gating schemes, AMD-specific state-of-the-art new features and performance impacting power knobs. 

  • System – understanding the relationship between power management routine bottlenecks as a function of platform design, including voltage regulator efficiency when considering various system-level peripheral device options. 

 

Preferred experience 

  • Strong understanding of PC system architecture, operating systems, drivers and BIOS

  • Expert in the knowledge of power management routines, processor deep sleep states, voltage and power/current gating techniques, power capping mechanism.

  • Good understanding of combined power/thermal management

  • Deep understanding of digital electronics, system level performance per watt trade-offs

  • Strong analytical /problem solving skills and pronounced attention to detail

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must be a self-starter, and able to independently drive tasks to completion

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Electrical/Computer/Systems Design Engineering

  • Experience: 5-7+ years
