What you do at AMD changes everything

At AMD, we push the boundaries of what is possible.  We believe in changing the world for the better by driving innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies – building blocks for gaming, immersive platforms, and the data center.

Developing great technology takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration, respect, and who will go the “extra mile” to achieve unthinkable results. It takes people who have the passion and desire to push boundaries, deliver innovation, and change the world. We invite you to take a look at this opportunity to join our Server Performance team.

Server Performance Tech Lead - Principal Architect

The Role:

Our team optimizes performance of AMD-based next-generation servers for its cloud and enterprise customers. As a passionate and dedicated principal lead in our Server Performance Group, you will lead the optimization of workloads for throughput and latency. Find opportunities for efficiency and improvement across all parts of system architecture: spanning the application and related frameworks, the Java VM, OS, hypervisor, network and storage drivers, BIOS, CPU core, memory and I/O subsystems. It's all about being both broad and deep in system architecture knowledge!

We collect and analyze performance profiling data and traces from customer deployments of AMD-based servers to quantify and isolate performance bottlenecks. Then we share the insights to drive features into the next generation of server CPUs and software stack components.

This opportunity puts you at the heart of the action where you will communicate, propose, and implement solutions to improve/enhance performance with given SoC/IP and markets through multi-discipline interactions internally and externally.

The Person:

Use your knowledge of the latest trends in the cloud (e.g. storage, security, IoT). Quickly and quantitatively determine how next generation server CPUs and platforms should be engineered. Then use your communication skills to influence collaboration toward engineering improvements.

Do you thrive solving sophisticated performance challenges? Come lead a small technical team as a hands-on tech lead driving the most complex and exciting challenges in the computing industry. Use your curiosity, motivation, and consistent track record to deliver outstanding results that establish and maintain AMD's technological leadership position.

Key Responsibilities:

Owning projects and processes of significant strategic or commercial importance and getting results by solving problems requiring cutting edge approaches and championing innovation across the organization. Making technical decisions with a major impact on product groups, go-to-market strategy, and customer happiness.

  • Representing AMD to the outside technical community, partners and vendors
  • Providing consultative direction with senior management
  • Micro-benchmarking, analyzing and tracing various benchmarks, workload characterization, competitive analysis on various hardware platforms, identifying bottlenecks and proposing feedback and solutions for performance improvement
  • Developing tools and methodology for performance modeling, workloads analysis

Preferred Experience:

Seek a person with a proven foundation in systems architecture, cutting across CPU, memory, storage and I/O subsystems -- plus a technical leader who has experience with:

  • Complex cloud or enterprise software stacks such as Hadoop, Spark, Oracle or other database,
  • Performance profiling tools, preferably x86 based (e.g. Linux perf, Windows perfmon)
  • Hardware performance counter monitoring tools
  • OS internals and kernel parameter tuning experience
  • Cloud/enterprise performance benchmarks is a plus (SPECjbb, VMMark, etc)
  • Leading staffing, budget planning, project execution and cross-team dependencies with strong communication skills
  • Minimum of BS + 9 years or MS + 7 years or PhD + 5 years

Academic Credentials:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field
  • Masters or PhD with emphasis on SoC/IP performance studies preferred
