Sr. Staff Technologist, DCGAP Thermal Mechanical Engineering Technician




As a Sr. Staff Technologist in the Data Center GPU and Accelerated Processing Thermal Mechanical Engineering department, you will be responsible for the Thermal Mechanical laboratory in the support of the development of AMD’s Data Center GPU products in this expanding and strategic market for AMD.  It is a small and growing team, so there are plenty of opportunities to make a significant contribution that could impact the product. The Sr. Staff Technologist in the Thermal Mechanical Engineering department will have excellent communication skills, planning skills, technical expertise, is a team player, possesses critical problem solving and troubleshooting skills, is a self-starter, and is well organized. They will be market savvy and comfortable in a multi-tasking environment.



The Sr. Staff Technologist in Thermal Mechanical Engineering will provide hands-on support for the development of GPU and accelerated processing products.  Day-to-day activities will involve system-level and component-level test setup (including instrumentation), testing, and analysis.  Job functions will include, but are not limited to:


  • Mechanical Verification to ensure product designs meet the form factors requirements in systems-level chassis and report findings
  • Thermal validation of products and bring-up systems, characterization of products for thermals, mechanicals, acoustic and electrical/power specifications
  • Work with internal teams to carry out testing and validation to meet or beat project schedules and resolve issues.
  • Analyze any test and/or field failures and support internal design teams to find the root cause of any thermal/mechanical/acoustic related issues.
  • Lab management including calibration and maintenance of all test equipment. Work with outside test facilities to complete acoustic and mechanical testing, as necessary.
  • Lab equipment procurement: stay up to date on the latest computer technologies and continually update lab equipment to meet industry standards.
  • Continual improvement of test methods and procedures for better efficiency and reliability.
  • Lab testing automation: develop and maintain automation scripts and tools that assist in running validation tests.
  • Data analysis: work with the team to develop databases and reports that simplify test and production data analysis.


This role requires considerable use of initiative and independent judgment – all within a framework of a tightly coordinated, uniformly executing global team.

Must be able to lift  test equipment that ranges from 10 lbs to 75 lbs

Critical Experiences & Competencies for Success:

  • Lab Skills – System/sub-system assembly, component instrumentation, and data acquisition
  • Data Analysis - Ability to work with and analyze large sets of data to extract useful conclusions
  • Test Automation - Ability to review equipment documentation and generate tools that automate their operation
  • Mechanical verification - Ensure board designs meet the form factors requirements in systems level chassis and report findings
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Willing to learn new skills, and put in extra effort when needed to do so
  • Fast learner, proactive, able to set priorities and work independently




Associates degree in Engineering +7 years or equivalent relevant experience as a technician supporting new product development.  Experience in electronics cooling and packaging a plus.
