What you do at AMD changes everything

At AMD, we push the boundaries of what is possible.  We believe in changing the world for the better by driving innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies – building blocks for gaming, immersive platforms, and the data center.

Developing great technology takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration, respect, and who will go the “extra mile” to achieve unthinkable results. It takes people who have the passion and desire to push boundaries, deliver innovation, and change the world. If you have this type of passion, we invite you to take a look at this opportunity available to join our Server Performance Group.

MTS/SMTS Server System Performance Architect

The Role:

Optimize performance of AMD-based next-generation servers for its cloud and enterprise customers. When you join our Server Performance Group, you will optimize workloads for throughput and latency. Identify system architecture opportunities spanning the application and related frameworks, the Java Virtual Machine, operating system (Linux, Windows Server), hypervisor, network and storage drivers, BIOS, CPU core, memory & I/O subsystems. Collect and analyze performance profiling data and traces from customer deployments of AMD based servers. Quantify and isolate performance bottlenecks, and share the insights to drive features into the next generation of server CPUs and software stack components.

The Person:

An outstanding technical contributor and a passionate and dedicated Server Systems Performance Architect who is well informed on the latest trends in the cloud (e.g. storage, security, IoT). A staff-level or aspiring member of technical staff who can quickly ascertain, using data, how next generation server platforms and high-performance CPUs should be engineered to support those needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for exploring opportunities to improve server performance through hw/sw co-optimization
  • Identify key components of Linux/Windows OS stack, libraries, compilers, drivers that require AMD server CPU architecture specific changes for performance improvement and work with the Linux/Windows kernel development teams
  • Debug performance issues and identify software stack specific issues and prototype solutions to fix them
  • Micro-benchmarking, and analyzing various benchmarks, workload characterization, competitive analysis on various hardware platforms, identifying bottlenecks and proposing feedback and solutions for performance improvement
  • Seek problems requiring cutting edge approaches and champions innovation across the organization; Make technical decisions that have a significant impact on product groups, go to market strategies, and customer happiness

Preferred Experience:

  • Exceptional foundation in systems architecture, cutting across CPU, memory, storage and I/O subsystems; Understand key micro-architectural/ISA features of server platforms and server CPUs
  • Deep understanding of operating systems concepts, data structures, x86-64 architecture, and virtualization
  • Experience running, analyzing, and tuning system performance benchmarks; Power user of performance profiling tools, preferably x86 based (e.g. linux perf, Windows perfmon); Experience with hardware performance counter monitoring tools
  • Experience with Linux Scheduler behavior, MMU, IOMMU; Exposure to KVM/QEMU (including x86-64 virtualization extensions)
  • Strong exposure to complex cloud or enterprise software stacks such as Hadoop, Spark, Oracle or other database
  • Exposure to the Linux kernel and related upstream development workflow
  • Advanced programming skills in C for operating system kernel & systems development
  • Experience with the GNU toolchain
