Technical Manager - AMD Research

AMD Research is an entrepreneurial research organization with a strong track record of driving research innovations into AMD products. We are a global leader in the development of the world’s most advanced high-performance computers (HPC), such as Frontier, the world-leading 1.5 exaflop supercomputer. As part of AMD Research, you will have a role on a winning team that works closely with government and commercial customers along with internal product teams and partners to develop the hardware and software technologies of next generation computing platforms, accelerating AMD to have the world’s highest-performing products.

 

THE ROLE:

AMD Research seeks a strong, collaborative leader with sharp technical skills to lead a highly educated and motivated team from the front in a hands-on manner. The candidate needs to have a demonstrated track record of technical innovation and leadership. The ability to interact with partner companies and organizations is essential. You will work closely with teams in product design and with external customers to shepherd research in architectures and software that address tomorrow’s needs today.

 

THE PERSON:

You are passionate about driving research into products by creating value through innovation, driving new technologies rapidly to fruition, and delighting internal product teams and external customers. You continuously coordinate across organizations, bringing together developers, customers, engineers, and product designers to solve the unsolvable. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive the delivery of world-class research from ideas into products
  • Mentor the career development of top-tier research staff
  • Oversee the creation of proposals for external research investment
  • Pitch novel solutions to customers and funding agencies. 
  • Collaborate with strategic partner companies in development of novel technologies
  • Drive the results of the research projects into product roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, software, and other AMD teams to create systems solutions for large-scale applications
  • Champion an innovation culture that creates results

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Leadership – managerial and technical
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills are required
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following categories
    • Architecture
    • Software
    • Systems
    • Cloud
    • Big Compute
    • Scientific computing
    • AI/ML
  • Experience with government contracts and export control compliance is a plus
  • Demonstrated track record of innovation embodied in successful products

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • PhD degree or equivalent accomplishments in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field
