Title: Analog Mixed Signal Analysis/CAD Engineer

Role :

In this position, you will be part of the 3rd Party Analog Mixed Signal IPCR Design Analysis / CAD team. Parallel teams within the AMD Circuit Technology division include Analog Mixed Signal Design, Custom Layout Design, and Post Silicon Analog Design Characterization. During the chip development cycle, the team’s focus is to review Analog Mixed Signal (AMS) circuit designs received from 3rd party vendors. Designs under review include next generation USB, PCIE4 circuit blocks etc. Reviews conducted: alignment to design specifications/contract details, electrical design analysis, and interoperability considerations for chip tool flows and adjacent AMD design block. Working with AMD internal teams, and the 3rd IP vendor, is done to resolve any problems detected. Detection of critical issues, well before product silicon manufacture, helps AMD maintain development schedules and mitigate a considerable amount of revenue loss for the company. Your efforts will help enable ASIC chip solutions that will become AMD’s next gen products within the international marketplace.

The person : The person who will be successful in this role, will have good attention to detail, works well with parallel teams, will look for opportunities to automate throughout the design analysis.

Responsibilities :

In this position, you will be an integral part of the hardware design process.

  • Responsible for understanding, analyzing and then supporting integration of analog/digital design components into the overall chip system/AMD product.
  • Self Initiative to review flagged issues, analyze the problem from several angles, and then provide an assessment if the design issue must be fixed or if the situation is in fact ok.
  • Investigating and then developing innovative ways of automating the analysis workflows.
  • You will use your combined hardware/software background to help build scripts and test cases to analyze/approve/endorse quality 3rd Party AMS designs.
  • You will interact with vendors outside AMD to review/discuss analysis results which indicate the design needs improvement, as well as interact with AMD internal teams for cross-referencing issues after design integration into the larger chip environment.
  • Improve and promote communication, collaboration, problem solving, mentoring, and training.

Within this role experience is gained in many tasks:

  • Analyze electrical performance of hybrid Analog / Digital mixed signal (AMS) designs implemented using deep sub micron CMOS technology.
  • Research into the purpose and behaviour of the design to understand and then highlight any key issues.
  • Present / explain key issues to partners from inside and outside AMD.
  • Work closely with engineers within AMD Markham and other AMD design sites worldwide to enable solutions to these AMS designs.
  • Use software automation to improve IP design validation methodologies.
  • Utilize industry standard physical verification analysis tools to review hardware design components before final integration and preparation towards chip manufacture.

  • Layout LVS (layout vs schematic comparison), DRC/ERC (Design/Electrical rule checking), Boundary & Circuit Topological checks of pre-silicon hardware design
  • Schematic and layout best practices, and industry-standard manufacturing practices
  • EM (electro-migration), IR (low-voltage power supply analysis), ESD (electrostatic discharge)
  • Design for Manufacturing and other Silicon Reliability topics
  • Static Timing Analysis (STA)
  • Spice simulation
  • Parasitic RC extraction
  • How to utilize common industry standard EDA (electronic design automation) tools and learn how the tools perform analysis/verification at an algorithm/concept level.
  • Revision control software
  • Best methods to present new flows / concepts to peers and colleges.

Preferred skillset and experience :

Looking for candidates who have both strong hardware and software skills.

  • An understanding of analog and digital transistor device behavior
  • Basic experience in using command line interface with UNIX or Linux, scripting, hspice, Verilog or VHDL, and drawing transistor layout are assets
  • The ability to develop well-structured and maintainable software
  • Candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills to work well with peers in Toronto and other AMD design sites.
  • Candidate should be able to conduct research to find root cause for software and hardware design bugs.

 

Education : BSc or MSc Electrical or Computer Engineering
