Firmware Engineer - Hardware Design

THE ROLE:

The Video HW IP/Solution Group, at AMD Markham site, is looking for a Senior Firmware Engineer for low-level hardware who will work in an established IP team developing low-level FW solutions for video decode & encode HW IP. Initially the role will require the candidate to acquire background knowledge of an existing video FW solution, the related hardware designs, features, and associated testing methodology. As a member of video HW firmware team, your focus will be on codec firmware that coordinates & does low-level programming of the HW IP that makes the HW dance and interacts with applications & the Operating System.  You shall be working with fellow HW engineers and the SW teams to "think outside the box".  You will also need to maintain existing firmware and work with the HW team to enable new features and debug both HW and system-level functional issues. You will work with fellow FW engineers and will actively participate in the development of high-performance HW+FW solutions for video codec and processing on various solution platforms.  You will regularly interact, collaborate, and work with HW design, HW verification, and various other engineering teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work under the direction of FW lead to engage various FW development and solution validation
  • Assist other FW engineers to develop FW support for new HW features
  • Optimizing FW code to improve performance
  • Maintenance of existing FW encode solution
  • Reproducing and debugging problems reported and identifying solutions
  • Assisting in debug and resolution of post-silicon issues involving firmware
  • Must be able to work with HW architects, HW designers and SW engineers to solve functional and performance issues

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Hands-on coding and debugging experience in FW development for a HW design solution -- minimum of 3 years
  • High proficiency in C programming and demonstrated examples of strong skills
  • Solving problems, being challenged technically, and coming up with creative solutions is what drives you
  • Enthusiastic, proactive, and able to share your ideas
  • Strong debugging and testing skills
  • Strong understanding of hardware principles including verilog, RTL, preferably with previous experience
  • Strong understanding of video codecs such as H.264/AVC & H.265/HEVC & VP9, AV1 is highly desirable
  • Experience with HW simulation, HW waveform debugging, and other design verification tools are a good asset.

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Minimum BSEE/CE, or equivalent degree
