Senior Manager  : Software Technical Writer


As the Senior Manager of the AMD Software Technical Documentation Team, you operate in a multi-faceted role that combines your leadership and people management experience with your abilities to establish and grow a technical documentation team, along with forming information development strategies including the authoring and publishing of content in close collaboration with Information and Content specialists.

You will manage a team composing of Technical Writers and Editors that work closely with developers, designers, architects, program/project managers and product managers to plan, create, and edit documents covering software, firmware and system-level information. 



Deliverables can span specifications, product advisories and application notes to programming guides and reference guides for GPU products intended for technical and engineering-based audiences.

Documents evolve by various means, including interviewing subject matter experts (SMEs), gathering information from various records systems, and analyzing product and feature requirements documents.

This role is situated in a dynamic environment, inclusive of business requirements owners, technical content contributors and respective audiences for the generated documentation assets.  Documentation deliverables will involve both AMD internal clients and external customers, with high impact, at high quality across content, layout and structure.  SW documentation is treated as an essential component of the overall product, thus governance, tools and processes are driven by continuous improvement and key metrics for team scalability, growth and maturity.



The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated individual who can prioritize and deliver multiple projects at a time with effective planning, delegation and assignment of multiple duties to a team of Writers and Editors, factoring each of your staff’s strengths and specializations.

Establishing strategies that align the technical documentation development lifecycle with the software development lifecycle is key to establishing and maintaining a strong relationship for the team’s engagement with the overall software community.  Alignment, roadmap planning and the strengthening of partnerships with other Technical Documentation teams in AMD will also be vital to ensure AMD’s business requirements for documentation are holistic and integrated.

You must be able to adapt to changing requirements and schedules. This role requires that you possess strong critical-thinking skills and provides you with the opportunity to excel and greatly influence editing, reviewing and publishing processes. You must also have a passion for technology, learning, and continuous improvement. A strong understanding of the documentation lifecycle is also required, as a monthly roadmap is defined to forecast, plan and execute all releases.

You represent the SW Docs Team in peer-to-peer stakeholders collaboration with HW Docs Tech Writer Manager, IT and infrastructure and resident Information Architects, Content Security teams and Tools Development Support teams



  • Establish strategies that align the technical documentation development lifecycle with the software development lifecycle is key to establishing and maintaining a strong relationship for your team's engagement with the overall software community
  • Define, develop and implement Tools and Process that governs and facilitates efficiencies and growth of the teams and serviceability of future needs of SW documentation
  • Capitalize on in-depth understanding of open-source software documentation to elevate SW documentation
  • Lead from expertise in Markdown and familiarity with GitHub and Visual Studio and other SW development platforms
  • Assess and evaluate documentation tools through formal requirements definition and analyses
  • Align and strengthen partnerships with other Technical Documentation teams in AMD
  • Identify gaps in content, inconsistencies in data, along with reviewing, performing "copyedit," and publishing documents using DITA XML in a Content Management System (CMS)
  • Utilize strong understanding of structured, topic-based, and task-based authoring
  • Leverage your passion for technology, learning, and continuous improvement.  A strong understanding of the documentation lifecycle is also required, as a monthly roadmap is defined to forecast, plan and execute all releases
  • Guide and define the SW Documentation Team’s mission, growth/scalability, training, processes and governance


  • Over 10 years of technical writing experience in a technical field (Engineering or Computer Science background is not required, but strongly desired)
  • Over 5 years of People Management experience
  • Experience authoring in DITA XML in a component content management system (CMS), preferably Ixiasoft DITA XML CMS and or Tridion Docs (SDL) is required. Experience with other DITA XML CMS systems may be considered
  • Experience working in an Eclipse development environment and oXygen XML Editor or similar application is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with Sphinx, Breathe, Doxygen, Markdown, HTML and ReStructured Text is required
  • Familiarity with software-centric documentation delivery models (ie OpenSouce, Developer Community and frequency of documentation updates)
  • Familiarity with software UI design concepts and writing for localization, along with experience writing task-based and context-sensitive help files
  • Self-starter and strong people manager skills and demonstrated leadership and visionary thinking attributes
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Experience working with JIRA, JAMA, Confluence, SharePoint
