STAFF EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALIST

THE ROLE:

 This position serves as a senior-level employee relations expert and is responsible for managing complex employee relations inquiries and issues; conducting investigations into employee complaints; proactively coaching and guiding managers on performance processes and tools, and providing HR leadership team insights into employee relations trends.  The primary scope is for Canada but will also encompass the US where required.

 

THE PERSON:

The Staff Employee Relations Specialist is a self-starter who can work under minimal supervision and be knowledgeable in HR Policies & Processes, employment legislation, HR tools, how HR operates, how to expedite solutions and be a reliable source of accurate information to managers and employees. The position requires excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to relate to people at all levels of the organization to understand and resolve issues.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide training or coaching for managers on topics such as managing performance, preventing harassment, handling difficult dialogues or other topics based on need.   
  • Provide consistent guidance and direction to managers in the handling of complex employee matters, including coaching managers on employee conversations.
  • Lead and document thorough and impartial investigations into employee complaints following established processes and documentation guidelines.
  • Document inquiries, actions, and outcomes into case management tools to ensure appropriate records are retained and actions can be taken.
  • Perform quarterly or ad hoc compilation, analysis, and review of case data to share significant issues, trends and concerns with HR leaders – building out action plans to address issues.
  • Understand and explain HR policies/procedures/processes to provide accurate guidance to employees and managers.
  • Keep abreast of local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management or a related field.
  • 5-10 years hands-on experience as an Employee Relations Specialist/HR Generalist.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct formal investigations and providing appropriate recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Proven ability to research information, analyze data, and use sound judgment to draw valid conclusions, prepare recommendations and build plans of action.
  • Direct Experience and Comprehensive knowledge of HR laws and regulations for Canada and the US.
  • Extensive HR knowledge, skills, and applicable experience.
  • Self-confident with excellent communication skills, and the ability to act independently.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to establish credibility, build rapport and create trust in a virtual setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive, emotional and confidential situations in a composed, discrete and professional manner.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and use time effectively and efficiently, while shifting frequently between multiple priorities.

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • HR or equivalent education preferred at bachelors’ level.
