The Role:

AMD is looking for a highly talented Customer Performance Engineer to join our Datacenter Customer Engineering team to help key customers develop world-class products around EPYC processors.  In this role you will be responsible for working closely with key customers, field application teams, and internal stakeholders to ensure that our customers can seamlessly adopt AMD silicon solutions into their product portfolios. You will work closely with top technology companies delivering breakthrough products in the cloud, enterprise, and HPC. This requires strong technical capability, broad and deep knowledge of server technologies, and highly effective communication skills to keep our customers moving seamlessly through the product lifecycle from concept to mass production.  You must have strong performance tuning/analysis capabilities and a solid track record of engineering results in both product development and customer-facing capacities. In this role you will work seamlessly across internal development teams and our customers during critical issue escalations and drive issues to closure in time to meet key product milestones.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Customer-facing system performance analysis/debug/tuning.
  • Be a specialist in the performance characteristics of mainstream CPUs.
  • Examine how different system/BIOS/OS/compiler/code configurations affect performance.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and analyze AMD strengths and weaknesses in system/benchmark/application performance.
  • Use all available tools and/or source code to determine the nature of the identified bottlenecks in depth.
  • Work with AMD’s architecture teams to build solutions to mitigate identified bottlenecks and/or suggestions to improve future product performance.
  • Apply a data minded approach to target optimization efforts.
  • Research alternative, more efficient ways to accomplish the same work and promote these to customers.
  • Develop technical relationships with peers at our customers and stay ahead of software and hardware trends and innovations, especially pertaining to CPU and system architectures.
  • Multi-discipline interactions with core and SOC architects as well as key stakeholders

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong knowledge of server system architecture and design including CPU cores, memory technologies, scalable interconnects.
  • Proven track record of working with top technology companies to jointly work on best-in-class products based on new SoCs/CPUs/chipsets.
  • Ability to break complex workload/system functional and performance problems down into manageable pieces and drive resolution through design of experiments and data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to debug functional and performance issues.
  • Experience in performing and reviewing micro-benchmarking, workload characterization, bottleneck identification, and performance tuning.
  • Experience analyzing system bottlenecks and optimizing systems/workloads for performance.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Shell, etc.
  • Knowledge of x86 assembler language and x86/x64 CPU instructions.
  • Experience with modern concurrent programming and highly parallel applications is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility with counterparts at top technology companies, communicate technical results clearly and accurately, and drive issues to successful closure.
  • Experience working seamlessly across engineering disciplines and geographies to deliver excellent results.
  • Experience developing and delivering customer communications to bring clarity to complex situations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication capability with the ability to adjust communications to the target audience.
  • Ability to work cross functionally in a fast-paced matrixed technical organization and multi-site environment.
  • 5+ years of customer-facing engineering work on server products is a plus.
  • Self-starter, quick learner, passionate about performance.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or other related majors.
