Project Title:

Advanced Image Segmentation using Machine Learning for Defect Analysis of Modern Microprocessors


Project Overview:

For the FINFET devices, isolating the defects is a complex task. Very high-resolution electron microscopy images are required to identify defects. The project plans to use Machine Learning for automated image segmentation for such images.  Image post processing including image segmentation can help to identify the subtle defects and contrast differences between similar features. For example, shorts between two metal interconnects.


Main project scopes, stating tasks/roles expected of the Intern:

As semiconductor process technology scaling continues, finding subtle defects has become very hard. Detailed electron microscopy analysis to check each individual metal interconnect layer is done to isolate defects. Modern microprocessors consist of more than 10 wiring layers. The project involves very high precision and fast image post processing to perform pixel-based classification. Hence, this project would involve the use of deep learning algorithm such as UNet and inception network. The various objects in image are labelled followed by training of the models to do image segmentation. This would help in identifying the subtle defects that can cause microprocessor to malfunction.


What the Coop can expect to learn from this project:

The student will have the opportunity to work on advanced machine learning models for image processing and gain insights into real life application of AI and deep learning in the modern industry. The student needs to be very pro-active to drive the project independently. The student will also gain in-depth knowledge of microprocessors & FINFET technology. Students with strong machine learning and coding skills are preferred.
