What you do at AMD changes everything

At AMD, we push the boundaries of what is possible.  We believe in changing the world for the better by driving innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies – building blocks for gaming, immersive platforms, and the data center.

Developing great technology takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration, respect, and who will go the “extra mile” to achieve unthinkable results.  It takes people who have the passion and desire to disrupt the status quo, push boundaries, deliver innovation, and change the world.   If you have this type of passion, we invite you to take a look at the opportunities available to come join our team.

Graphics Systems Architect

THE ROLE:

As the Graphics Systems Architect, you have primary technical responsibility for the architectural definition for the system level features and requirements ensuring strongly competitive Radeon Graphics products. You contribute to the engineering specification for the hardware systems, with the exception of the GPU silicon and software, which are architected and delivered by a partner organization within AMD. You will participate in driving three principal areas of architecture: 1) serve as a key technical interface to MNC partners in aligning our n+1 solutions to their upcoming platform designs and future product roadmaps to ensure our solutions are well aligned with their technical, cost and performance goals; 2) participate in representing the System team in advanced roadmap forums and provide system level technology and cost assessments and presentations in Concept Phase Exit gates, and 3) partner with the Business Unit product managers in ensuring that their Market Requirements Documents are fully and accurately translated into engineering specifications for the System functional teams to design, build and test against.

In this role, you will serve as a primary architectural interface between the Graphics System and Customer Engineering team (GSCE) and the Semi-Custom Business Unit (SCBU) to ensure that especially thermal/mechanical design elements of our graphics add-in cards comprehend the data center system requirements for the cloud gaming and virtual desktop infrastructure applications.  As that interface, you will guide the GSCE add-in card development teams on the implementations of those design elements and help reconcile any trade-offs of the implementation with the SCBU business leadership.

In this role, you will also foster deep partnerships with our MNC (multi-national companies) customer architect counterparts to ensure adoption of AMD graphics technology in their roadmaps, with AMD’s Graphics Silicon and Software design teams to ensure System technical considerations are part of all roadmap decisions, with Product Management and Program Management leaders on program definition to ensure our products are fully defined to meet the market requirements, and with Graphics System Engineering functional leaders on setting the specification POR. This role starts in the product ideate and pre-concept phase and transitions into as-needed guidance once a program Plan of Record is established and execution teams take ownership.

This role reports to the Senior Manager of Architecture for Gaming Systems and Customer Engineering.

THE PERSON:

As a bilingual senior technical leader, you will draw on your broad engineering expertise and your deep understanding of MNC platform design considerations to ensure our system solutions are highly advantaged for their future platform designs. You will use your technical depth in understanding these platform designs to collaborate and innovate with senior system design leaders across the various functions to define winning graphics products. You are action-oriented and embrace the opportunity to step into a technically challenging, highly dynamic environment where your personal measure of success is highly connected to the outstanding products you build.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure our system solutions are aligned with MNC and channel technology roadmaps and operational use cases. Assess advanced roadmap concepts for implications to system technology or costs and produce the system specification for our graphics products.  As design wins grow, you will potentially identify the need for additional team members that will be comprised of architects with specific capabilities in one or more of these responsibilities and collectively (or individually) you will accomplish these tasks for each generation of Graphics products:
  • Interface to SCBU and champion their specific data center-oriented requirements into the system architecture of select GSCE products.
  • Responsible for all technical interaction with Asia MNC team’s architects and technical alignment between our products and their technology roadmap plans.
  • While not responsible for defining IP or SOC-level features, you will share in the responsibility for ensuring that IP/SOC features are understood and the impact to System features and requirements are fully captured and understood by the functional execution teams.
  • Engage in AMD advance Roadmap meetings to ensure System-thinking is continually factored into Silicon product definition decisions.
  • Complete delivery of the System Feature/Requirements specification aligned with Feasibility Phase exit ensuring functional teams have full knowledge of the architectural requirements and can effectively drive the Planning Phase of the NPI process.
  • Communicate feature prioritization and trade off as well as technical issues, risks & status updates with Product Management during Concept and Feasibility phases of the NPI process.
  • Contribute Architectural Lessons Learned initiatives and measurements to improve our system definition processes
  • Utilize customer feedback to continually improve team performance and enhance our product definition quality.
  • Participate and contribute to MNC workstream process led by the CE team.
  • Requires the ability to travel (when safe) throughout southeast Asia and the United States.

  • Technical presentations to and engagements with global MNC (OEM/ODM) customer architecture teams focused on Asia pacific region
  • System Architectural Analysis content for Concept Phase Gate Exits
  • System Feature/Requirements Specifications temporally aligned with Feasibility Phase Exit
  • MNC roadmap tracking for mobile, desktop and server products.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience at Senior Architectural Staff Member or Design Leader in the Notebook/desktop PC or Server platform industry with a proven track record of successfully building and delivering complex products involving multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with motivating, and mentoring highly technical teams
  • Demonstrated success in supporting and leading a global architecture team
  • Passion for delivering high quality products
  • Driven to achieve a high level of customer/partner satisfaction
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in Mandarin and English with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience driving technical alignment of cross-functional teams from multiple departments
  • Systematic thinking skills. Ability to deal with novel problems from different perspectives and from different levels of abstraction
  • Ability to analyze and understand complex workflows and processes, and develop innovative approaches to streamlining and automating them
